While researching recipes on how to make the perfect Juicy Lucy, or the Jucy Lucy as some say, I came across a chowchow article that documented the history and the ensuing burger battle that still remains. Here's what they had to say:

"Two bars in Minneapolis, Matt’s and the 5-8 Club, have competing claims to being the creator of the infamous Juicy Lucy burger (or Jucy Lucy, depending on whom you’re talking to). However CHOW.com’s Supertaster, James Norton, thinks the Blue Door Pub in St. Paul actually serves the Perfect Jucy Lucy—he explains why in this CHOW video. Whichever version you prefer, these cheese-stuffed burgers ooze cheesy goodness with every bite—and now you can make your own at home. Be sure to aim any cheese drips over your French Fries."

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound grass-fed ground beef

  • Dash sea salt

  • 1 dash black pepper

  • 2 slices American cheese

  • 1 brioche bun, toasted

  • 3 to 4 leaves butter lettuce

  • 2 thick slices beefsteak tomato

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons red onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons mayo

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons yellow mustard

Steps to Make It

  1. Begin by dividing the dough in 2 and shaping each half into a very flat patty.

  2. Chop the cheese into 4 small squares and stack them on top of each other.

  3. Place the cheese squares in the middle of one of the meat patties and top it with the other patty - sort of squishing the sides together to help hold the cheese in the middle of the meat.

  4. Salt and pepper the outside of the hamburger patty and set aside.

  5. In a greased frying pan, turn the heat to medium-high and place the burger patty in.

  6. Let the patty cook on one side until the bottom is crispy and has reached halfway to your desired doneness. Flip the patty and cook on the other side until the interior is hot enough to melt the cheese; about 7 minutes.

  7. Remove the pan from the heat and put the lid on the frying pan.

  8. Meanwhile, add mayo and mustard to both halves your bun, then add the juicy lucy burger, then the lettuce, tomato, and onion and the top half of the bun.

  9. Slice it down the middle before serving!
